James still isn’t sure how comfortable he is with what they’re doing, but he’s agreed to it, and now they’re following through.

Shira sits at the kitchen counter on her laptop. She’s on the phone and speaking Hebrew. James doesn’t understand. He stands to the side with his arms folded, watching. Shira isn’t doing anything on the laptop; she’s watching, too. She talks to her friend back in Israel. Noam Katz. He’s a computer analyst for Mossad. It looks to James like he’s also a proficient hacker, though perhaps the jobs aren’t too dissimilar. He isn’t sure.

Occasionally, Shira turns back to James and explains to him in English what’s happening. “Noam has run the girl’s face through facial recognition software, and now we’re just waiting for a hit. He’s going through all the security footage in the city, and outside the city, from that morning.”

James bites his lip. “Surely…surely my government’s already doing this, right? Like, the NSA, the FBI, the CIA—they’ve already gotta be doing this.”

“Maybe they are,” Shira says. “And, if they are, maybe they’re not as good, or as fast, as Noam is.” She presses the phone to her chest so Noam can’t overhear. “Are you having doubts?”

James looks at the laptop, at the images whizzing by on the screen. He grits his teeth. “They’ll pass,” he says, hoping this is true.

If they get something—if they get a hit, if they manage to find out who the girl is, or where she came from, or perhaps even where the ARO base is, then he’ll not feel so bad. Then he’ll be caught up in the moment, and all these doubtful butterflies will have been worth it.

Shira turns back to the screen, returns the phone to her ear, and resumes talking in Hebrew. James doesn’t understand a word of it. He’s always wanted to learn, for her. To impress her—to surprise her. But he’s always so damned busy with work. He’s never found the chance yet.

Shira perks up suddenly and points at the screen, motioning for James to come and take a closer look. “We have something,” she says. “Do you see?”

The image pauses. It’s a bus, stopped at some traffic lights. It’s hard to tell where the picture was taken—a security camera by the side of the road or on a building, perhaps. “What am I looking at?” he says.

Noam must overhear. He draws a red circle around one of the bus’s windows. James leans in closer.

“It’s the girl,” Shira says.

“Oh, shit,” James says, seeing her now. “Yeah, yeah, that’s her.”

She sits by the window, staring straight ahead. Whatever software Noam is using, it’s impressive. It’s managed to pick the girl out via her profile. She sits by the window on the bus, and someone is sitting next to her. It’s hard to make out what they look like. Within the confines of the bus, they’re nothing more than a dark shadow. They might not even know the girl, but at the same time, they could be an accomplice.
